High Volume Production of Micro-drilling in Injection Nozzles
The drilling of small holes with diameters of 0,06-0,08mm can be performed in different ways. But most companies that manufacture holes using a chip making process, have the problem of chips in the nozzle afterwards. Also, the accuracy is not as consistent as in EDM drilling. So for most of the microdrilling applications, EDM drilling is used. Even in high volume production.
The Challenge
Very small injection nozzles have to be drilled to an exact depth and without producing chips. Plus or minus (1) micron and the nozzle is scrapped. Furthermore, some types of nozzles have to be drilled in different angles. This seems to be simple, but it isn`t. If there is a mistake in the process of series production, it is a desaster! The real challenge is to produce without any mistake.

The Solution
Basically, an EDM drilling machine, equipped with a rotary table is a possible solution. However, to produce large quantities of parts, it is necessary to build a special machine tool. +GF+ AgieCharmilles built such a machine some years ago, which is called the “AGIETRON 4HP”. As the name implies, this machine has four drilling heads, which are able to EDM drill four nozzles, at the same time. To reach every angle for drilling, the AGIETRON is equipped with the very special, (4) position “JS Quattradron Rotary Table” .
With this machine, 4 Injection nozzles can be drilled in one step. That means that the AgieCharmilles AGIETRON 4HP is able to go into mass production.
